Fair enough. Really, you only need to kill The Flash, though.

And I just don't like the idea of
tossing the combined earth...I know it would still be around but if
the stories are focused on other earths then it might as well not be.

I don't know about focused. Earth-2 would get one title, say JSA or
Infinity Inc.
Maybe - maybe - one Marvel Family comic. Perhaps a LAW comic.
Then specials or one-shots of everything else.

Leaves, what? 30-odd comics set on New Earth?

They didn't solve anything because the were soft reboots. A hard
reboot is a bad idea, but a multiverse lets you have one without the
problems usually incurred.
No you can't...there too many versions of the characters and their
histories...no single one will ever make everyone happy...be the
combined-earth version or an alternate...

There doesn't have to be one version of every character. Wizard-Billy
Batson on New Earth and traditional Billy on Earth-5.

I still any major continuity change or shift will only result in new
problems of a similar nature...

True. And leaving things the same causes problems.

there is no way around it with a
library of characters and stories this large...so I'll take the devil
I know over the devil I don't...I say the current status quo is
salvageable as is...clever writers CAN make it work...Geoff Johns has
been proving that on JSA for years now.

That must why I stopped reading Geoff Johns.
