There will always be stupid stories. Pawning them off on an alternate
earth is a LOT better than trying to retcon the thing because with a one
universe one timeline set up you have to *EXPLAIN* the retcon and many
cases that can be WORSE then the original problem.
The proper thing to do with a stupide story - if it contradicts
existing stories - is to say, "We made a mistake. That was just dumb.
Please treat it as a mistake, not as something to be considered part
of our continuity."
If the stupid story has already had sequels or implications for other
stories, the writers and editors should figure out what the
implications of removing the stupid story are for the rest of the
universe, and somehow communicate that to the readers.
And do your best to keep this all down to a minimum.
(By the way: that's the same scheme I would recommend on those rare
occasions where there is a GOOD story that simply cannot be reconciled
with existing continuity, can't be made an Elseworlds because you
actually WANT it to be part of the new status quo, and affects various
parts of existing continuity. To wit: write it so that it changes
continuity as little as possible. [You may discover you don't have to
change continuity at all, but that's a different issue.] Figure out
its implications for the universe as a whole. Communicate that to the
reader. And so this as little as possible. That's what I call a "good
retcon.")
The trouble with saying "the Mopee story took place in another
universe" is that the universes in the DCU are connected, and
characters can travel between them. So Mopee's still out there, and
part of your setting. When what you want to say is "Mopee was a dumb
idea, and doesn't belong as any part of the DCU."
Well you can set it up so that character can travel between SOME of them
easier than others. I agree that travel between Earth-1, 2, 3, and later
S, and X was insanely easy. That said travel between Earths that were
really variant timelines (Like Earth-1 and Earth-B) Pre-Crisis was insanely
hard.
