It didn't. The current one are annoying brats and the previous one
went looking for Conner and the Teen Titans in some of their best
stories.
They were also annoying, though for different reasons. (At least until
Abnett and Lanning did some great work with them.)

: Disagree.
After what Johns did to the Avengers, and how tedious JSA can be, and
how shoddy much of the thinking behind InfCrisis was, I don't really
see Johns as a major talent anymore.
I think he's overextended himself. As for Avengers, it seems to me like
Marvel isn't his forte.
The danger (or the complaint at the time) was that they often
"modernize" the past by giving the characters "feet of clay." There
seems to be no other way to update their heroes than to sully their
reps, show them engaging in criminal behavior, uncover drug addictions
or stories of abuse, get them into therapy, or reveal their past
successes as some degree of sham.
I don't think that's really modernization so much as knocking them down.
Things of that sort have obviously always gone on. People like to look
at the past as some sort of better era but it really wasn't. It was
different, but they had just as many problems. OTOH, people really
aren't paragons of virtue - even the ones who are heroic. That doesn't
mean they need to become adulterers and so forth but there should be
flaws. Roy Thomas seemed to be able to show those flaws without
otherwise degrading the characters.

Damn unreliabel Superboy-Prime!
That actually bothers me a lot. Superboy-Prime was sort of the promise
for a better future. He's a guy who'd barely been a hero for five
minutes but who was ready to give his life to save a world that wasn't
his own filled with people he'd never know. I think what InfCr did to
him was a near-atrocity.

: I think Marvel is beating the Marvel Zombies concept to death...no
: pun intended.
I don't buy any of the Zombies titles, but I don't mind a peek at the
Zombie-verse now and then. See: Marvel has a use for multiple
realities as well!
I like them but not the crossovers. I disliked the idea of the Ultimate
and Supreme universes meeting, though I suppose it was akin to the
Avengers meeting the Squadron Supreme. Worse, the UU is supposed to
know crossover with the MU. It was one of the events I hoped would
never happen.
On the flip side, I thoroughly enjoyed books like What If? and
Elseworlds. They gave us glimpse into an entirely different world where
events took different turns - but they were entirely self-contained. To
me, that's how alternate timelines should work - completely on their
own.
: I doubt there will ever be an entire mini series about Superman,
: Batman, or Wonder Woman where no costumes are involved...they're too
: iconic and I don't think DC would be daring enough to try it.
What did you think of the Warren Ellis Planetary one-shot which took
them on?
I didn't really like the Planetary/JLA crossover. But, then, that's
consistent for me.
