Short answer is that they definitely know each others' IDs,

Thanks.
Wonder Woman is in on it too (bonus points for your argument).
Heh. I was the one arguing that they _didn't_ know each
other's identities. :( Considering how many years it took
Superman just to tell Lois, I couldn't believe he'd tell
someone else.
Traditionally, DC heroes tended to trust other heroes in ways they
wouldn't anyone else. In recent years this has gone in cycles, but
before that it was almost de rigeur that heroes would reveal their
identities to one another pretty soon after teaming up. I'm pretty
sure the Flash and Green Lantern had exchanged names long before
either let their love interests in on it, and by the mid-70s the JLA
all knew who one another were. (The Flash didn't tell his wife till
a year after they married(!), though she'd already learned it by
then-- turns out he talked in his sleep.)
...
Over the last 65 years, there have been a few different
versions of the story of how they learned each others' IDs.
I'd also like to know what the most recent version is.
I'd be more interested in knowing what the first ever version
was. After all, that was when the writers took the big decision
to let it happen. A definitive turning point in the way the
legend evolved.
Superman #76, in 1952. Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne ended up
sharing quarters on a ship and accidentally found out each
other's secrets in a flash of lightning.
Nitpick: IIRC, it was the light from a fire they were each suiting
up to fight, streaming in through the porthole.
