That's not true.
Very few films make a profit according to production companies... but
that's because they pay people "net points" (a share in the profits) so
their accountants hide the profits.
With Superman Returns, for example... Warner Bros would have paid
Warner production companies (FX, food, camera, distributors, whatever)
more than they'd pay an outsider so the costs were higher (but they
still keep the money) DC would have got a huge license fee, despite the
fact that Warner owns DC and don't have to pay.
At the other end Warner Home Video would have got the DVD rights cheap
(so Warner Video makes all the profit but the film doesn't).
However, the *actual* profit is much, much more than the claimed
profit.
