Two problems with the film: the sacred and the profane. Finding the imagery blunt, obvious, and trite is a better explanation than making that portion of the audience "squirm," surely.
while families in flyover-country aren't real comfortable bringing their kids to a film carrying so much subtext (not to mention overt story) about extramarital relations.I don't think that's limited to super-religious versus non here, either. Both my wife and I felt very uncomfortable with the stalker/would-be adulterer subtext. You're right in that it's a big blunder to put that in a family movie in the first place, though, of course.
