If you're going to have a consistent universe, and characters that
interact with each other, you really (IMO) need to keep track not only where
individual characters are but when. Say Robin is in an adventure that takes
six issues to run, but only covers, say, three days. This has Robin at day
+3. Then, over in, oh, say, Birds of Prey, those six issues covered a month
and a half of story time, putting them at day +90.

Anytime during the BOP storyline after Day +3 that Robin makes a guest
appearance, then, the adventure over in his own book would be _over_. It
would be in Robin's past and if, say, he got his left arm cut off in his own
title (I'm not suggesting that, mind you, I'm just saying), it should be
missing here too. And if Robin were to show up in BOP in a situation as
described above, it would require real careful handling to ensure that it
doesn't badly spoil the Robin storyline.

Handled well, this kind of thing could provide for some excellent
storytelling reinforcing the illusion that this stuff happens in something
like the "real world."

This, however, would require advance planning and coordination between
the creative teams on different titles. It would also require the attitude
among creators that they are part of a team building a world instead of
godlings given their own little worlds to play with as the mood strikes
(IMO, we have Elseworlds, what used to be called Imaginary Stories, for
that). Frankly, I'm not holding my breath.
