The challenge of space travel is not so much the physics of getting
human out there, but the physiology of enabling them to survive the
journey. Quite apart from the issue of sufficient provisions for a
long voyage, NASA and the astronauts have tended to minimize the
extent to which space travel makes humans sick, and depletes calcium
and electrolytes from the body.

As for going quietly and slowly, I doubt humans are even going to
manage that job properly. Not only is the species committing suicide,
but there's certain to be a lot of collateral damage.
