Please Help Identify Short Story

I don't know if this is the best newsgroup to post this in, but I couldn't
find one for short stories. I am trying to locate a short story I read
many years ago (it might have been in Reader's Digest). The story was told
from the viewpoint of a tree. It discussed how perspective didn't really
work, but the tree had to actually do the work. It would start out small
and as you approached, the tree would have to grow large and bob back and
forth to match your walking. As time went on and people moved to horses
and cars the tree had to grow much faster and learn to "trot", etc.

It was a really intresting viewpoint and totally original. If anyone knows
anything about this story, please post some information.

Thanks!
