Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest literary figures of the 19th
century. His literary genius is
apparent in his poems and novels. Some of his best works include The
Return of the Native, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D'
Urbervilles and Jude, the Obscure.

His novels had an indelible impact during his time and also till date
many of his novels inspire theatre productions as well as films. His
novels, which reflect the Victorian society with all its
idiosyncrasies, were perceived as irreligious.

Nevertheless, current scholars believe Hardy to be one of the greatest
tragic novelists of English literature.
....men's silence is wonderful to listen to.
Time changes everything except something within us which is always
surprised by change.
My opinion is that a poet should express the emotion of all the ages
and the thought of his own.
It is difficult for a woman to define her feelings in language which is
chiefly made by men to express theirs.
Some folk want their luck buttered.
Of course, poets have morals and manners of their own, and custom is no
argument with them.
A lover without indiscretion is no lover at all. Circumspection and
devotion are a contradiction in terms.
A resolution to avoid an evil is seldom framed till the evil is so far
advanced as to make avoidance impossible.
