One possibility is that many of those asked hadn't actually read any
of the books. The iconic Olivier film version of Wuthering Heights -
the one that defined the story for popular culture - shows us a
Heathcliffe who, while he could never have been played by, say, Kevin
Costner, is nowhere near as big a nutter as the one in the book.
