Differences in DigiCharat Nyo and What Bandai Gave Us

While at Beeg Lots (one of many in my area of the US) I picked up 5 more
$3 Bandai DVDs. Among them was Digi Charat Nyo V.2. Imagine my glee at
something like this. (well, that's easy for those who actually like Digi
Charat in any form.)
Up to now, my experience with DGC Nyo was on imported gray-area DVDs. I
never managed to acquire the entire series this way, but managed to get
quite a bit. Region free, English and Chinese subs, you know the deal.
So anywho, I picked up Bandai's 2nd volume of their release of Nyo. I
popped it in the player, selected Japanese with Subs, and played at
random what aired as the 7th half hour of the series. The planning of
the 10th thingy for their street of stores and the fake Usada Hikaru.
Those 2 stories.
I was really shocked NOT to find the familiar "Heartbeat" tune as the
opening theme! Bandai, what happened? First the shot of Digiko having a
nightmare or something and the advisory message of making sure you watch
in a well lit room was gone, and then Heartbeat sung by Priere wasn't
there. I didn't make a note of what it was, but to me it seems like a
later opening theme and animation was substituted for some reason. I
will have to check my later import disks to see if that's the case.
It was sad to see Funimation having to edit their release of Child's Toy
because they couldn't get the separate rights to Tokio's "7 pm News."
Seems like the best source for that was fansubs.
OK, so what about the subs? Strange as it may sound, the Import DVDs
have a slightly more accurate translation than the Bandai disk, even in
spite of the script seemingly coming from the translated Chinese! I
could hear words I know and saw the translation reflect that precisely,
while the Bandai disk glosses over those niggling but still Really
Important Details. They do at least subtitle some of the kanji signs
that pop up, and sometimes those are slightly off, too.
I still wish for a way to rip a DVD, extract the streams into the
separate components, edit the text of the subs, and then bring it all
back together in a nice neat package without all the technical fuss
typically associated with projects of such magnitude. Someone has to
figure this out. While the Import discs are more accurate, they could
use a tweak to make them more readable in spots, and to correct the sub
for the line in Heartbeat to read "Listen to your heartbeat."
I haven't checked the dub, and probably won't. Nobody can do Digiko just
right. I heard one dub of some other DGC anime and thought my ears were
bleeding.
The Ending song on Bandai's 2nd Nyo disk is a familiar tune also on my
import disks, as well as from Ranma 1/2, "Equal Romance." It's a nice
bouncy tune. My Import disks have the occasional episode ending with
that tune as well as live video of the girls who sing it! I don't
suppose any of Bandai's disks for the US market has that? I wonder if
they retained DigiCharat Ondo for those episodes that have that song?
It's interesting but at the same time disappointing to see an anime,
brought over by the company who made it (funded it?), undergo changes
that really didn't need to happen. (that's what happens when a company
tries to go the cheap route and not pay for licenses like they should.)
I'm glad to have my grey-area DVDs in this case. I would LOVE to rip the
appropriate bits from both disks and burn out a copy with the video
clips that I expect to be where I'm familiar to find them.
