Not necessarily. Miyazaki-sama's Howl's Moving Castle was based on a book
by English writer Diane Wynne Jones, after all.
And as has been frequently mentioned in here, it was the American sitcoms
Bewitched and I Dream of Jeanie that inspired the entire 'magical girl'
subgenre.
