If this was, in fact, the norm for human behavior, we would not HAVE
a civilization. And don't be a wiseass and say "you call this a
civilization". Yes, I do. This is an extremely high-technology
civilization which DEPENDS on most of the people NOT trying to destroy
each other.
Hey -- here's a newsflash: By your definition, we DON'T!!!
Because the nature of man is to destroy, degrade, etc... If we
actually depended on helping each other, none of us would survive.
Actually, I'd venture to say that the reason we survive is mutual
benefit.

Have you ever tried to run one, or been on staff at a con at a
reasonably high level? It's an expensive, thankless, gruelling job,
and if you're disrupting the convention, you're not pissing off some
Faceless Anime Masters, you're causing problems for regular everyday
fans who have expended hundreds of hours of effort -- often UNTHANKED
-- to put on a convention for other people.
No one would want me to work at a con.
Trust me on that regard.
Besides, most of the people who run cons (especially the likes of AX)
are basically incompetent. Which see the mass turnover of the staff
at the SPJA this year. A-Kon becomes a test of trying to get from one
place to another with any expediency.
Which also rather argues against your cynical view of the world.
There's VERY little in it for many staffers on anime cons.
Then WHY DO IT???
At the risk of repeating myself...

Well, you're pretty much utterly WRONG. There is no "fandom" in the
sense of something that could even HAVE enough organization to have a
"party line". Please, call in and contact reality once in a while,
even if you don't want to live there.
Bull***. If that were the case, there wouldn't be the problems which
exist now -- which basically consist of fans openly ripping off the
anime companies left, right, and up the center, to the point where
fans who _might_ buy something and don't want the same damn six titles
that are on television all the time are basically out of luck!
You're jumping the gun. We might end up there. But the last time I
checked, (which was last tuesday...) there were still more than six
titles available.
Hell, there are more than six titles available right now that I'm
actively collecting, which are available.
(Come to think of it, what AM I collecting right now?)
Full Moon??? Hello????
Come to think of it, there are at least two titles available right now
which have even less mass-market appeal than Full Moon. (Specifically,
Strawberry Panic, and Simoun.)

How can one reason with someone who has such differing starting
points?
God, there's times I wish I were back in jail. There was more
understanding in there than on the outside.
No, there was probably more collective thought.
While I wouldn't go so far as to say that one can easily profile
criminal behavior, I'd be willing to hazard a guess that there are
certain behavioral and cognitive thought patterns that are common
amongst prison inhabitants.
You may be correct in that what the rest of the posters are putting
out is collective thought. (Which mind you, says nothing about the
validity of their points.) But don't assume that jailbirds are
magically immune to the same phenomenon. :-)
