They are only broken and bypassed for Internet-savvy customers. Which,
despite what you think, it not the bulk of the user base. Protection schemes
that are modestly difficult to crack suffice to keep Joe Random from copying
the game for all his friends, which is the main purpose.

The stupid schemes keep legit customers from using the software they
bought too. A friend of mine bought one of those Dogz titles for her
daughter, only to have it refuse to play. Turns out, the copy protection
on the CD won't allow it to be played in a CD burner. Well, this was a
laptop. It only came with a CD/DVD burner, and the company's response was
"sorry, buy a new computer." Well, I could have bought an external
enclosure and a cheap DVD-ROM drive...but instead I went and downloaded a
hack (illegally - thanks to the DMCA) and used that to copy all 20MB of
the game to the hard drive. All this for a 3 year old game that cost $10.

Thankfully you're internet saavy. Sucks to be typical user. :-(

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

My friend's response was to just buy the daughter a Playstation2. At
least there the copy protection doesn't stop you from playing the games
you bought in the store.

DRM that isn't burdensome to the consumer. But you can only have that
on closed systems for which a single entity controls distribution.

Say what you want about proprietary and "closed" systems, but the PC
and it's ilk are about as open a platform as you can get. DRM is
almost always going to be burdensome on a system where the hardware
can't be guaranteed.
