Couldn't agree more. I feel that if you're going to use Vista, you
should go with Vista Ultimate. Especially, in the beginning, buying a
new computer, you could upgrade to ultimate for very little so cost was
not an issue. I also feel that if your computer (whether new or old
running XP) could not handle Ultimate, then it also is not very good at
running one of the lesser versions.

Datum: My experience so far with machines that score low on the MS
scores have been almost workable for basic use. Not noticeable worse
than their XP counterparts. That said, for users who are only doing
basic tasks, Vista doesn't offer all that much over XP, and I don't
usually advise users of those machines to upgrade.

Actually, scratch that. These days aside from early adopters, and
games, and power users, I don't really advocate the upgrade at all. New
machines are another story.

Which just comes back to the other bit of advice I usually offer anyone
that asks me about buying a computer. Before you buy, first you need to
decide what you are actually going to use it for. It's pointless buying a
top-of-the-line machine if you are only going to do a bit of basic
email/web/office stuff, but it is just as bad to buy a basic machine if
you are a gaming enthusuast.

Agreed. I would also suggest that many people who are not gaming
enthusiasts want a good multimedia machine capable of HD quality. In my
opinion, one of the objectives of both Microsoft's Vista and Apple's
Leopard (OS 10.5) is to improve the HD experience.
