So, if hundreds or
even thousands of anime titles were available in subtitled-only form first, were available within a week after the show aired in Japan, and were available for a couple of dollars per episode, how many people would refuse them altogether? Versus, how many
would pay a couple of bucks to try them, and perhaps keep buying
more?
It would be an interesting experiment, but the real question would be
would that make more money for the Japanese then selling the license to
a US company. If no, then it's a failure for them. And, I'd be willing
to bet money that most people would download illegal copies rather then
pay the $2 or so. After all, apparently while 2 million people have
downloaded the new Radiohead album from their site and half have paid
something, another million+ have downloaded it from file sharing
sites...

Speaking of Radiohead's big experiment, see also

"... They received over 5000 responses to an online survey asking how
much people actually paid for Tom Yorke and co's bits and bytes. The
bottom line is that when they factored out those who may also be in the
market for the comically priced £40 slipcase version, the average price
paid for "In Rainbows" was £3.88, with about a quarter of downloaders
being freeloaders and paying nothing but the 45p handling fee. ..."

Given the legal choice between "pay" and "free", a quarter chose "free".
Mind you, this is audio, not video - there's a chance that the situation
might not carry over. (But I wouldn't bet on that.)

That £40 slipcase version includes the original CD, and extra CD with more new music, and the original album on two vinyl LPs. If they'd sell us just the two CDs in one more economically-priced version--say, £20--I'd have that. I'm still one of those maniacs who likes to have something to hold in their hand once they pay money for it.

Watson
Who is a pretty big Radiohead fan, but not enough to have $80 CAD to blow on one album.
