I keep wondering why the word is translated "ghost", when it obviously
means what most Americans would render as "spirit"?

The only use of "ghost" for the meaning I can thing of is in church
("Father, Son, and Holy Ghost").

Probably because of the frequently used phrase in English, 'The Ghost in the
Machine."
