No, Flash can be used to make entire Flash presentations - websites are
made with open-standards tools such as XML, which allow for situations
such as enlarging fonts so they can be read. See the World Wide Web
Consortium's web site, <http://www.w3.org/>, for details.
Yes sweetie. I've been design commercial web sites for 10 years.
Flash also provides all the facilities for zooming, printing. For our own sites we also provide the content in RSS (XML) for alternative readers.
Take the BSJ magazine; the back end is .NET and some Flex, and... WordPress! We have a bridge that sits between WP and Flash that generates XML that is then turned into the magazine itself. It also means we can generate static versions of the site (XHTML) and streams (RSS/Atom) for those who don't have Flash.
(Pulling a George Bernard Shaw and quoting my own website: "The easiest
way to avoid getting a link from me is to use proprietary standards for
the site's content when there are perfectly good open standards that do
the same job; to me, "Click here to get the plug-in" usually means
"Click the Back button now"." And I don't have the Flash plugin
installed.)
Flash is NOT a plug in. It's a web browser and a Virtual Machine. It can be used independently (directly from your desktop), or inside a browser.
Flash is also partially OpenSource (see Flex, AS3)
This gets around several significant issues with HTML: Every browser renders a little differently, so if you are designing highly branded content you spend a lot of time writing code to fix issues with display.
You cannot animate or interact with HTML. It's a static thing. Pages. We live in a multimedia world; a place where people like to see video and hear sound, and like graphics not just mountains of text. Yes you can use CSS to style pages (but then, you need CSS support), or JavaScript to animate your content (but, that requires JS to be enabled). So in reality, no different than having Flash enabled.
So, for the 98% of people who have Flash installed and enabled, people who enjoy YouTube and listen to music online, who enjoy interactive games and graphic rich content, they aren't cut off because of woefully inadequate OpenSource "standards".
This of all forums I'd have expected some understanding of that. The rich world of anime and manga cannot be done justice with static pages; our aim when we started this project was to create a unique "experience", not just "another blog". We wanted to create a magazine that's online; with the tactile experience & design rules of a physical magazine, with all the benefits of a fluid multimedia platform that Flash offers - without ever sacrificing usability or functionality.
Our Japanese magazine is 100% Flash. :)
Thanks for the warning.
Don't be so negative. Open your eyes. You could be missing some fantastic things.
