I'm only halfway through, atm (down with A Orchestra!), but it's been a lucky break that I found this one at the same time as "Lovely Complex":
Had just finished Princess Tutu on disk, and was still a sucker for any "spirit of the performance" art-school series that caption-titled its classical music pieces for the viewer...
But the "silly" half of the series just had the right balance of dynamic--Between Chiyaki's Blackadder-esque "Surrounded by idiots" slow-burn, and Nodame seeming to come from Sunako's home planet, to the point you expected her to be drawn as a faceless SD every time she hung on his arm.
I think that you'll enjoy where the second half of the series goes as much if not more than the first half.
I get the impression the series is *supposed* to be as much about Chiyaki's growth from prick-hood into a less selfish "spirit" of performance--
But just when you're ready to see Nodame as the standard rom-com "free thinker" character, she just keeps coming in farther out of left field, and her showing him a Doraemon episode to inspire him was pure natural. :)
