So, I've been restraining myself from responding to the trolls and
spammers that started showing up here. Has it really made that much
difference? I haven't noticed any indication that they have given up
and gone away due to boredom. In fact, I'm seeing more each day, and
it's hard to keep the killfile updated.
A while ago I killfiled everything posted through Google Groups, and
whitelisted those contributors to this group who (for some reason) feel
the need to use Google Groups to post here. That takes care of most
trolling. The remaining troll-feeders can easily be killfiled by thread
or by address.
Which is a drawback to killfiles alone, since the spam still comes
through, and worse, gets archived so that casual browsers still
come across it years later.
I am willing to bet they don't even think about this group, since we
seem to be accepting their antics as normal.
The problem is, that the troll starts his thread by crossposting to
various (unrelated) groups without a followup, and the troll-feeders
keep crossposting to all groups, because they're too retarded to adjust
the Newsgroups header.
I'm ready to start fighting back, but if no one else cares, I'm not
going to bother. If it gets bad enough I'll move on to whatever online
blogs I feel like contributing to, and the trolls can have yet another
playground to add to their collection. Broken windows, and all that.
I wouldn't object to fighting back, however, there's not much prospect
of success in it AFAICS.
Well, it seemed to work before during the last troll storm last year,
although I'm going to use slightly different tactics this time. I've
analyzed their attack pattern, and there is a chance...
Cap.
