I watched the Manga DVD of DEATH AND REBIRTH last night and was
reminded that it's two pieces combined, a 69 minute compilation of
selected moments from the series, followed by its own end credits and
then an intermission and then an approximately 26-minute preview of
THE END OF EVANGELION (basically the first 26 minutes of END OF...).
So here's my question: Was DEATH AND REBIRTH released in Japan the
same way it is on the DVD or were the two pieces first released in
theaters separately from each other?
Pretty much the same way as on the DVD. I've seen the Japanese movie poster, ad it's definitely Death and Rebirth. I say "pretty much" because Manga Entertainment tied together Death and The End of Evangelion for the sake of convenience (recording commentaries, etc.), and didn't take into account that BGM had changed between Rebirth and the final version of that sequence in The End, so we don't get the original BGM. Yet more evidence (if we didn't already have enough) that Manga could screw up a one-man rock fight.
