Re: OT: VOIP via Pokemon

This is off-topic but there is enough cross-over that this shouldn't
be a non-sensical thread. But moving along...

A friend of mine's boyfriend is in Japan right now and will continue
to be so for the next year. My friend is frequently calling him using
landlines, which is pretty expensive. When I learned of this, I told
her that she should use VOIP as that would be much cheaper. However,
my friend is pretty computer illiterate and her boyfriend is
apparently more so and while the idea has come up before, they haven't
been able to make use of it.

I then read about how the new DS Pokemon games (yes, the use of
Pokemon DS and the fact that the boyfriend is in Japan is the cross-
over of topics that I mentioned. Yes, it's pretty weak) have VOIP
capabilities and that it is actually pretty easy to use (which is very
attractive as that means that any instructions to my friend and her
boyfriend would consist almost entirely of "Buy a DS, a copy of
Pokemon for DS and a headset for a DS.").

As many people in this group are fans of the Pokemon series and most
likely have the game and have used the VOIP function (ELL has
mentioned it at one point), what do people know of it and think about
it? How well do you think it would work as a VOIP solution?

Thanks a lot.

Depends how expensive expensive is to you. I just changed my cellphone
plan for this weeks visit, and calls cost 75p flat change + 15p per
minute, which isn't that expensive really. Calls TO my cellphone while
in Japan are a flat 75p charge. Vodafone + international discount +
vodafone passport, SE K800i.
