I was going to load Linux, but it wanted a working copy of Windows to
install over; if I'd had a working copy of Windows, I wouldn't have
needed a new OS.
If you have WinXP running, that's not a working copy of Windows??
What Linux type/version do you run, I've thought about running Linux,
but when I download it it always seems to be a file to make disks to
run it from, and I'm too big a klutz to get my disk writing program to
make disks from those image files. ^__^;
Well, you usually need some kind of bootable medium to install it.
Burning an ISO image isn't that hard, though. Most disk burning programs
have an option for that (e.g., with Nero it's in the "file" menu, Deep
Burner has it in the startup dialog, ...). Select that option, select
the ISO image you downloaded, insert a blank CD/DVD, and hit "burn".
For starters you could also try CoLinux [1], which can be installed on
top of Windows.
