What's the trick in getting the torrents to run?

All else being equal, there should be no trick.

Ah, then the error must be with me.

Not necessarily. Some torrents take a long time to start up, especially if
it doesn't have very many peers online. Maybe you've just been picking the
wront torrents.

Could be, but according to the tracker it was very well seeded. Not
spectaculary well, but sufficient enough - I got other stuff with
about the same stats alright.

....

As far as I kow, I was not and I even went so far as to disable my
MacBook's "software firewall" . I also created special exemptions in
the software firewall for a dedicated port I named in the Azureus
client.

Maybe your ISP is blocking the default BitTorrent ports (6881-6899). Try
setting Azureus to use a port in the 49152-65534 range, and make sure that
port is open in your firewall(s).

I chose something in the 50.000 range and other - though not all -
torrents worked fine.

But since I just learned that I'll very liky get 6 MBit DSL by the end
of June (new suburban area, but when they did the groundwork during
the early basis, they installed fibre optic - oy vey.) I won't bother
until then. Then I'll have complete control over the router which I
don't have right now.
