What's the trick in getting the torrents to run? Even well seeded

The first thing I would look at is the firewall. Make sure that you have
opened the port that your bittorrent client is using.

Most bittorrent clients increase speeds through techniques such as
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), Network Address Translation (NAT), Apple's
alternative to UPnP - NAT Port Mapping Protocol (NAT-PMP), etc. To help
best configure your system, go to this site:

http://portforward.com/routers.htm

Then, click on your router. Since you have an Apple, for the sake of
argument, let's assume it's AirPortExtreame. This takes you to this URL:

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Apple/AirPortExtreame/AirPortExtreameindex.htm

You then have a list of applications (most of them are not bittorrent
clients). I don't know what client you're using. Let's assume for the
sake of argument it's Azureus since I know Azureus performs well on a Mac
and it supports NAT-PMP. So, click on Azureus. It will take you to this
URL for Port Forwarding for the Apple AirPort Extreame Base Station:

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Apple/AirPortExtreame/Azureus.htm

Follow the steps it lays out and you're in business.

BTW, this site has information on numerous other comm related topics. The
information I gave you above may not be specific to your system, but you
should get the general idea. If you're still having problems, provide your
system specific info and either I or someone else will be more than happy
to answer.
