abyss (the titlular "Satan Pit"), as we see Naruto do (if only
symbolically) in this episode--an abyss that symbolizes the hell his
early life was, and the hell Gaara's still living in. Interestingly
enough, both title characters have to confront the beast in the Pit to
save the people they care about.

in that same bottomless pit of darkness and pain.

The translation in the fansubs just outright calls it hell.

Here's a literal translation:

Although I don't know what happened, that guy's been all alone enduring
continuing continuing anguish without relief up till now... believing only
in himself... still fighting even now, in hell.

This passage resonates with an earlier passage that Laurie made reference
to. As with this passage, the word 'hell' is not mentioned. However, the
do use 'pain and darkness' to echo the earlier 'darkness and pain'. Here's
the passage as she quoted it followed by a literal translation:

Non-literal translation:
"But when I think back on where I was before I met them, it's scary.
Nothing but pain and darkness."

Literal translation:
"Therefore, I shudder when I think about things in the past... that anguish
is no trifling matter... it's a pitch-dark hell."
