drink alcoholic beverages after dinner. So my normal beverage to drink
with anime is fruit or grape punch or iced tea. However, if I'm having
popcorn while viewing anime my first choice is always ginger ale.
In the winter, however, I do tend to like to have a shot of brandy or
Armagnac from time to time in the evening, but generally only if I'm
watching a fairly serious anime. (There's nothing worse than snorting
expensive liquor through your nose from laughing while watching a
comedy! <L>)
Oh there's a worse fate. Spilling it before it ever gets to your lips.
I never drink coffee or tea while watching anime; not even Japanese
green tea. I don't like to have hot drinks get cold, and if I'm sipping
a hot drink while watching a half hour anime, the hot drink is bound to
cool off before the end of the show.
This is an argument for travel mugs. Insulated, spill proof travel
mugs. I use them even in the house, whenever I'm drinking hot
beverages away from the dining room table. Since I'm not the one doing
most of the domestic maintenance, it's only fair!
So, do you like to drink while watching anime, and if so, what do you
find best suited for your anime tastes?
Really, water is the best. I try to go through at least 2 liters a
day, more than twice that in the summer. We're blessed with potable
tap that on its own is free of odors and odd tastes, but a quick trip
through an activated carbon filter tends to "freshen" things a bit.
If it's summer, Iced tea in the aforementioned mugs will remain ice
cold through two episodes if I haven't managed to finished it before
then (a rare occurance!) Iced coffee is a slightly less common treat,
helped much by the recent acquisition of a coffee grinder. But really,
I like my coffee hot.
If it's the winter, all bets are off. We keep a variety of herbal and
traditional teas and tisanes in the cupboard, along with all the aroma
based additives that make tea such a pleasant prospect. My personal
favorites are fragrant chinese jasmine tea, hot mugi-cha (I know, I
know! Blasphemy!), or vanilla tea with 3 or 4 cinnamon sticks.
(Incidentally, said cinnamon sticks get tossed in a bag after the tea,
and saved for the car, where when inserted carefully into the air
vents, make the vehicle a much more pleasant place for 2 or 3 days
while it's too cold to open the windows.)
What about snacking while watching?
The meat of the question! If I'm hungry, the notebook follows me down
to the dining room, where I end up eating whatever is lying around.
This is a filipino household, so leftovers are the rule rather than the
exception, and snacks often end up being whatever was for dinner last
night.
Failing that, we invested in a hot-air popper two years ago, and
popcorn consumption has increased to match availability. Occasionally
I'll top with butter, or butter mixed with hotsauce and pepper. Makes
for a spicey, if a litttle messy of a treat.
But again, since my main viewing area is the bed, I don't usually snack
while watching. Crumbs in the bed are just icky.
Do you ever have a craving for Japanese snacks or something
similar?
I've never had a particular urge for japanese snacks per se, at least
not the stick/chip/candy sort. Not that I don't eat them, but I won't
seek them out specifically for consumption during anime watching. Part
of this is that I was exposed to these products long before I became an
anime fan. Philadelphia is a large port city, with a significant asian
community, so these products were never really in short supply for our
family.
Now when it comes to proper japanese foods, that's an entirely
different story! Somen, and Tamakake were foods that weren't part of
my diet prior to becoming an anime fan, but have been sinced introduced
as part of the "quick eats" regimine, due to thier ease of preparation.
