Do I really need to explain to you that jokes *can* be told
without gesture or facial expression to hint at them?

Well, of course they can be told that way. What's in question
here is whether they can be interpreted when you 1) Can't see or
hear the person telling the show joke 2) barely know that person.

In most cases they can.

I think you're wrong.

Then I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree here.

Or how one can actually read a posting within its context and then
draw conclusions from that?

Yes, and in context, it looks like you were telling the guy to buy
the series. What conclusions are we to draw from that?

The context is also that my reply obviously referred to a totally
different meaning of the word "get" than the OP. Clear contradiction
like that usually occurs when someone a) doesn't know the language
too well or b) is joking.

There's a third option, but we'll get to that in a mo'.

I'd say that a quick glance at my previous posts

Again, look above: "barely know that person". Frankly, I haven't
seen that many posts from you before this. And unless it's someone
who says something that really stands out right away, I don't know
people that well from just a few posts.

in this group would have ruled out option a), so what conclusions can
you draw from that?

That you think you're unique enough that people know your sense of
humor even though you only seem to have been here less than a month?

Try again.

but taking a look at previous posts

I'm not gonna google someone's previous posts just to check and see
whether they're joking or not, thank you.

If you refuse to learn about a person, then don't complain about not
knowing that person.

Granted, that requires some thinking,

What you're suggesting is being a damn mind reader, actually.

No, actually I'm merely suggesting a little common sense.

And if that actually worked on Usenet, you'd have a point,

For me it does work.

But as I said in my other posts there are enough idiots here that
sometimes it's hard to tell humor from stupidity.
^^^^^^^^^
Sometimes, yes. But not nearly all of the time.

Anyway, if you want to further discuss this, I suggest to continue
the discussion by mail. F'up2p set.

No. I will NOT have this discussion on a private forum.

Mail is mail. Mail is not a forum.

It started on the ng, and that's where it will stay. If I get an
e-mail from you with this subject line, I will delete it without
reading it. I HATE when people change followups. And it was rude of
you to pull this *** without mentioning it at the beginning.

Followups in Usenet are a valid means to (re-)direct a discussion to
where it belongs. Whether you like that or not is entirely irrelevant.
Since this discussion is completely off-topic in raam and IMHO in no way
of public interest, I set a followup to me.

And what do you mean by "rude"? The followup is in the header, and I
even announced it in the body. Read the entire post, before you hit
"reply". Sheesh.

BTW, I'd like to apologize to everyone who may have felt offended by
the little flamewar between Lurker and I, but I don't tend to take
insults too well,

Usenet is not really designed for people like you.

It is much more designed for people like me than you can even imagine.

especially not from hypocrites like him. His claim "I insult
EVERYONE"

He's not just claiming that--it's the truth.

It still doesn't get him an "insult cobalt free" pass, and I'll wipe the
floor of this newsgroup with his sorry little hypocrite ass anytime
again if I must.
