I was looking through the August 2006 Options magazine and noticed an
interesting product review. http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN914162 The
Japanese take on slot cars should not have surprised me. It looks kinda
fun.

Other than the '86 bodies, I don't see anything distinctly japanese
about this particular slot car set. I do kinda wish HLJ had bothered
to list the scale of this set though!

The article has a reference to 1/55. I will need to check the kanji as it
is not one I know.

That, and I'd love to know how they got them to drift around the
corners.

In the magazine article they have a number of photos including one of a car
sitting in a hand. The car is larger than the slot cars I had as a child.
They look to be about 4" long. There is also a photo of one with the body
removed. Along each side of the car and at the back are weights. It looks
to me that the cars are weighted in such a manner that they will slide with
the rear tires are spun going around corners. The front tires are also very
small and can turn quite a bit. The cars also have a small pc board with
LED for head lights and tail lights. The track is 4.8 meters long.

When I get my slots that tail happy, they go flying off the
track.

True, my slots would fish tail or fly off the track as well. :)
