Ouch!

Yeah, I've been looking for an opportune moment to make that
comparison. Big brother figure,

And in Katara's case, her *actual* big brother... ^_^

has none of the super powers of the other team members [*],

Indeed.

horrible things keep happening to him ("Why do things keep attaching
themselves to me?!").

"I'm tired of being everyone's ***-monkey!"

But that's about as far as the Avatar/Buffy (AtLA/BtVS) parallels go,
IMHO.

Yeah...

[*] Sorry, the label "Avatards" ain't doing it for me. Too much
like "retards"

Um, duh.. it's SUPPOSED to sound like that. I'm guessing ELL got it from
"Narutards", a name for Naruto fans.

or "[hoist by their own] petards." "Trio" is simple, but undistinctive;

It doesn't work for me for a few reasons:
1) If the ads for next week are right, there will soon be four human
members of the team,
2) some of us consider Appa and Momo members too, so "Trio" doesn't fit
even now, and finally,
3) "The Trio" is used for the main three characters in the Harry Potter
books (Harry, Ron, and Hermione), and I'm easily confused enough as it is
without my fandoms using the same names for stuff...

"A-Team" is taken; how about "Aang's Gang?"

/-:

Yeah.. that was... <sigh> Having "hardened criminals actually
be caring and stuff. Cliche, much? d-:

We don't know they were hardened criminals. Given the rather
flexible nature of jurisprudence in Chin, they may've been
incarcerated for violating the dress code.

True, true.
That really WAS the worst town they'd visited, And that includes some of
the Fire Nation towns they've been in....

Geopolitics time: Chin is presumably part of the Earth Kingdom,

Yes, it is.

as are most of the places the trio have visited. But it seems the
"Kingdom" is a loose federation of city-states, left to their own
devices and customs.

Oh, yeah. Look at this town compared to Kyoshi, which is pretty close.

Either because Omashu is busy prosecuting the war, or because
it's a big continent with no fast means of communication.

Or they're just relaxed about that sort of thing.

It turns out Kiyoshi DID kill Chin, who was an evil tyrant and
conqueror, [...]

More geopolitics/history time: Chin was busy overrunning the
continent. This was about 400 years ago. Avatars have been around
for at least 800 years (given the comments of The Face Stealer to
Aang at the end of s1), so presumably all four forms of bending have
existed that long.

Ok...

Omashu was founded by Oma and Shu, at the dawn of earthbending.

Just Oma, actually, Shu was dead.

Was there an Earth Kingdom at the time of Chin, or was
he simply supplanting the current dynasty with his own? --

I'd say the latter.

which in what happened repeatedly in (our) China over the
past 4000 years.

Makes sense.
