Or, more accurately, sk8r bois.
Sk8r subculture was among the first to adopt and appropriate anime-related
character art and logos as clothing decorations. Not out of any inherent
otakudom, but because it was something "unique" and "alternative" and all
that crap.
I have only seen kids with the wheels thing. But the sizes are Mens 5 -
12 (of which I would wear a 7), so it includes adult sizes. Do adults
really wear that type of thing (assuming SKATER means it has wheels)?
If they were ROLLERSKATES (which nobody uses anymore), or INLINE
ROLLERBLADES, they would have wheels. But "skater shoes" are not
skates--they're footwear for sk8rs.
And yes, there are, believe it or not, adults who rollerblade. And adults
who sk8.
