Don't need to be kid-friendly...

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the suggestions and comments. I just wanted to make clear to
everyone that kid-friendly is not a priority in my movies. In fact, the
Grands can't watch most of my collection. They do come over to visit every
couple of months or so, but I don't base my DVD purchases on whether they're
OK for kids. In fact, I prefer the adult ones. My husband's tastes aren't
even close to the same as me, and when we watched Akira the other (him for
the first time) all he kept saying was, " Oh, well, surprise, something else
blew up. Look, there goes another explosion!" He wasn't thrilled. But his
preferences aren't my priority either. I buy what "I" like.

Hoo, boy. Some anime fans get VERY upset when you call it a "genre".
It's not, it's a medium (Japanese animation) that comprises many genres.

You know, I had a feeling I was wrong, but wasn't sure what the approved
term was.

I have ordered "Cowboy Bebop: Perfect Collection", "Now and Then, Here and
There", and "R.O.D. - Read Or Die".

How'd I do?

I own two and have seen the other, and think that you've made a good
choice.

I'll warn you up front that "Now and Then, Here and There" is *_NOT_*
kid-friendly; it deals with the horrors of a war that doesn't even know
about the Geneva Conventions, in an up-close and personal way.

The other two can be a bit problematic for youngsters as well, but a
sufficiently-permissive household should have no problems with showing
either to 'tweens or young-teens.

I like Read or Die; it's one of my favourite anime series right now.
(But if you saw Aje's post about my FAQs and read the Anime Primer, you
already know that. <grin>)

Since I didn't have a chance to reply to your earlier posts, I'd like to
recommend a few other shows that you might like...

"Angelic Layer" - A 'tween-aged girl moves to Tokyo to live with her
aunt, and discovers the latest fad: the robot doll fighting game called
Angelic Layer. She turns out to be very good at it on her first try,
which amazes everyone except for the people in charge of the Layer...
The kids will like the young protagonists; the adults will like the
subtle, detailed story between the fight scenes.

"Tsukikage Ran" - The title translates as "Carried by the Wind". This
is a samurai show, where the hero and a sidekick wander around the
pre-industrial Japanese countryside and almost-by-accident solve
problems in the towns they visit. This is one of the stock Japanese
genres, and it appeals to the sort of person who really likes "Princess
Mononoke"; this particular show is different in that both of the main
characters are women. If you don't mind showing the youngsters violence
(and the results of violence are shown; people die from sword blows),
then it's kid-friendly. You can buy the entire series in one box set.

"Risky Safety" - This is a short series about a shinagami (a
not-particularly-Grim Reaper) and an angel who share the same body, and
the people whose lives they touch. Sometimes comedy, sometimes
dramatic. Kid-friendly only in households that are open about the _big_
questions; while Risky is almost a "sits on the shoulder" cartoon devil,
having that character keep trying to get other characters to kill
themselves is something that some youngsters might not appreciate...

I also second the Lurker's recommendation of "Azumanga Daioh" and
Derek's recommendation of "Slayers".
