According to the "ADV Vid-Notes" that annotate the ADV DVDs of "Excel
Saga" and "Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi" -- two shows whose
raison d'etre is to be *catalogs* of references -- yes.

Not just manga, anime, Osaka-style comedy, and US SF refs -- there are
a few specifically labeled "This is obscure, even for most Japanese."
I don't recall what those were, unfortunately for this thread.
