You mean some of the very best of Laserdiscs can look better than your
average DVD, if and only if they were mastered from a good source, the
player is of good quality, and the disc itself isn't already subject
to laser rot or fogging.

Mini DV most definately DOES have compression. Granted, DV25 isn't
quite as lossy as MPEG 2 or 4, but it's still compression.

LESS data loss.
>We have been told DVD is better and accepted that with out question.
Putting aside the artifacting that can occur with a bad transfer on
DVD, there's the fact that even discount DVD players are now coming
with component, and often DVI or HDMI outputs which put a cleaner
signal to the television than even the best LD player's comb filter
could ever hope to achieve.

Laserdiscs WAS the king of video reproduction. Your average DVD in an
average player is more than the equal of most pressed Laserdiscs in
resolution, audio quality, and color reproduction.
>MiniDV is a close second.
If you wanna go down that route, MiniDV isn't really a distribution
format that competes with the like of LD or DVD. You can't buy movies
in MiniDV format, so the comparison isn't really fair.
And ignoring that, there are several professional recording formats
that are equal or superior to MiniDV.

Amen to that. If you're not going down the ebay route, geting a
working player gets increasingly difficult every year. At this point,
getting replacement PARTS gets increasingly difficult every year. :-(
I'm dreading the day those bearings in the drive for my cheapie
Pioneer finally give up the ghost. When this happens, my LD's will be
no more than stiffeners for the Jacket Art. :-(
