Remember, Ed was the initiator of all this, and as older brother, bears full
responsibility for his younger brother's well-being. And he has failed at
that. Therefore Ed is determined to return Al to his body at almost any
cost. That is the tragedy and the horror of the scene in Lab 5 - Ed just
about "sells his soul" to get Al back.

Ed sees his own losses as his own just punishment for his mistakes. Ed can
live with his mechanical arm and leg - a simple scratch, a splash of solvent
and Al is gone forever...and Ed knows this.
