Short answer: Incredibly better.

Long answer: The VHS tapes, and the DVDs released thru Rhino, were made by
using collected 16mm prints that were originally sent to individual TV
stations to broadcast. These prints were 30+ years old, worn, and on
Eastman film stock which is notorious for rapid color fading. The new DVDs
use visual materials from Tezuka Productions, who own the original
negatives, and who transferred them to DVD brilliantly a couple of years
ago.

The NEW Kimba DVDs look identical to the Japanese DVDs.
