Seriously I think the inclusion of these codecs on to relatively low cost
DVD players means that at lease 4 of the manufactures think that what we are
doing with the fansubs is the wave of the future. The H.264 codec is an
incredible change in the encoding process. It makes MPEG 2 look like the
dark ages. The Lite on unit that for $69 after rebates can record MPEG 4
real time to standard disk. That means 10 hours or more at what is better
than the best MPEG 2 quality on a single sided DVD disk. It means 2 hours
of HD on the same disk. This makes blue ray and the other new DVD format,
unnecessary for the general consumer. Like MP3 before it, having H.264 in
the publicly available devices changes how I and other view the "old"
format. The old format will be around for a long time. So I think you
should give a rat's about this. There are over 700K of folks using H.264
and the other new codecs now. That?s enough tech savvy people to make the
companies adapt to us and not us adapt to them. This will happen much
faster than the MP3 revolution.
