98 = 95 + Internet Explorer
ME = 98 + System Restore + upgraded Media Player + Win2K look-and-feel

The biggest giveaway is that device drivers come in three flavours:

1. 95/98/ME
2. NT
3. 2K/XP

While all of the above provide roughly the same interface to applications
(so you can have an EXE which works on any of them), the interface to
device drivers depends upon the kernel.
