I tell you, the best mountain accent I've hear by a non-mountaineer
was in a B-movie called "Next of Kin" some years ago. And it wasn't
Patrick Swayze, the star, it was this guy I'd never heard of called
Liam Neeson. He played a character called "Briar Gates", and I swear
I thought they'd found him on the streets of my hometown in Kentucky.
He looked and sounded just like guys I'd gone to high school with,
in fact I thought he was the only original Kentuckian in the whole
movie!
Imagine my shock when I saw him years later in interviews where he
used his own voice...
BTW, I thought the intended plot of "Next of Kin" was interesting,
a Chicago Mob family getting into conflict with a tight-knit clan
from up in the hollers, but the execution of the movie, well, if
you see it, bear in mind a phrase from the lead character: "You
ain't seen bad yet, but it's comin'."
Cap.
