I think you may be right about the Sophie's powers thing. I guess
Miyazaki was a little too subtle about it (or perhaps some of it was
lost in the dub), and it mostly just went right over most peoples'
heads (including mine).
Regardless of all that, I still find the ending to be horribly rushed,
and wish they could've given it a little more time, even just a few min
more, just to calm it down some.
