English IS a living language. Try going to Britain for comparison
and you'll see how much the English has grown here in America since
travelling across the Pond.
Actually, quite a number of the differences you'll find, including a
lot of those decried as "Americanisms" being adopted there, are
actually usages preserved in the US and changed in the England.
Back when I were a linguist, we were taught that dialects tend to
become more conservative the further you go from the "linguistic
center" of a language, where successful linguistic fads tend to start.
In the case of English, this was London up until probably at least the
early 20th century. (Now it's somewhere in the US, probably, I'd
guess, Los Angeles.) In the US, the conservatism increased as you
left the port cities on the east coast and moved inland, where there
was less contact with England. So until recently, at least, it was
English in England that did more of the changing.
