Nah, more a case of people wanting to shorten words as much as
possible.
My dad's first cell phone from the late 80's/early 90's was nothing
more than a receiver plugged into a box with an antenna sticking out.
The things people can do with 'em nowadays didn't exist yet, they were
just portable telephones and nothing else.
