Not much, granted, coming from the "Spamalot" guy, but a step in the
right direction.

Yes, it's an homage, but I believe that the basic joke is an old
vaudeville gag.
I believe it was a commonly used as a sound effect in the early days of
radio. I think Idle may be taking credit for something that he did not
create.
