Oh, check that. From Of Mice and Magic, in the Walt Disney
chapter:
``That was the first time that anybody ever brought
characters to life,'' says Chuck Jones, who remembers his
reaction to the Disney short in 1933. ``There were three
characters who *looked* alike and *acted* differently; the
way they moved is what made them what they were. Before
that, in things like Steamboat Willie, the villain was a big
heavy guy and the hero was a little guy; everybody moved the
same. Even in Fleischer's stuff, the basic difference
between Popeye and Bluto was the size difference, not the
action difference.''
Chuck must have been trying to make time with Norm Ferguson's
granddaughter that day or something. Popeye and Bluto are
completely different in the way they move and act. The pigs are
all the same. And as for the villain being a big guy with Billy
Beltcher's voice... that's exactly what the wolf is.
If you want breakthroughs in personality, I would point to Felix
and the earliest Betty Boops, like Mysterious Mose. No one ever
did characters like those before them.
Three Little Pigs is remarkable for the way the music was
incorporated into the film. The score and featured songs
form a foundation that pushes the whole cartoon along, and
the timing all relates to the beats in the music.
See ya
