OT? A few pond questions

Hi all,

I'm still not feeling brave enough to look at rec.ponds, hope you
guys can help me out!

My half-barrel pond has been going for about a month now, plants
finally reached the surface, water finally cleared from peasoup
green to merely a bit green... all seems fine.

I was given some toad tadpoles by a neighbour, so I have popped
them in (acclimatising as I would for fish) and they seem fine
too.

While looking at them, I noticed small wiggly things - a few mm
long, seethrough apart from black dots at each end. I guess I'll
get lots of insects and suchlike, but should I care? Note, we
don't really have a problem with mozzies in the UK (and I can't
find a mosquito dunk product in the UK anyway) so I'm more curious
to find out what I need to look for. I'm hoping it's something
my toadpoles will eat. Since they don't seem to like anything else
- but they are still small.

Also, the water was FINE at first. So I was happy to go without
a liner, like I'd read about. Barrel didn't smell and it was
watertight. But now it's started to have a film on the top every
morning, which I skim off with a net lined with kitchen towel.
It's not a problem, just wondering if it's harmful.

Am I worrying too much, or should I be hunting down answers?

Advice welcome. I do like new projects but I do hate being a newbie!

Cheers all,
