Fascinating article. I've been told before that rinsing a bio-sponge
in chlorinated water won't harm the bacteria, but I've never seen that
statement backed up as well as it is here.
Quoting a passage:

easily removed. Bacteria enclosed in a matrix of Polysaccharide
material, thus allowing intercellular communication, growth and
survival in a hostile environment.
It sounds like if allowed to grow long enough the bio-colony could
become a bio-monster and eat small animals, then humans, then entire
villages, then THE WORLD.
