It's easier in metric. IIRC, one litre pure water is 1 kilogram at 25C.
Because a kilo is about 2.1 pounds and a gallon about 4 litres, then a gallon of water should be around 8-9 pounds. The old aquarium kid's books long ago said 10 pounds per gallon - just to be safe.
