Just look on various fish supply sites. A lot of them have detailed
info regarding the various filters, such as is explained in the users
manuals. Petco has a pretty decent item description and how the
various types of filters they sell work.

Basically most hob types pull water n through a water inlet tube, and
push it out into a larger resivoir, through which it flows through a
series of various filter media types, be it a basket filled with
filter floss or batting, bags of activated charcoal etc, and then
discharges out a outflow spillway back into the tank.
Others use a pump to actually push it through various types of filter
media.......
