I didn't know you were on dial up, Netmax. What a bummer! I just
changed to DSL and it makes for a whole different Internet experience.
In addition to dial up and DSL I have, over the years, used ISDN and
satelite services. DSL is by far the most reliable and dependably
fastest. The satelite, at times, was faster, but not dependably.

Another consideration, how much download is allowed. I was always
running into some arbitrary "ceiling" set by DPC, the satelite
service. They would dun me by slowing my speed to dial up for hours
or days.

Cable, wireless and satelite have another characteristic in common,
the speed varies with how many users are active. They are like pipe
lines, a fixed total throughput. Whereas ISDN and DSL have separate
pipes to each user.

Usenet service is not part of many services. I pay $120/year for
Giganews. Their "retention" is awsome, I think they now hold messages
for up to 4 months. Actually this creates a little more control when
first looking at a new site. It takes a long time to download the
messages the first time. It is best to download "headers" only the
first time. Binaries such as music and movies take huge storage
capacity. I believe I now have 200 gigabytes of storage and am using
about 120 gb. Fortunately I no longer download so much.

Weird how some services carry A.B.A and other don't and to "strip" of
the attachments is really strange. I monitor the Giganews newsgroup
and from time to time a thread comparing various services comes up. I
don't recall seeing the stripping brought up as a negative for
competitive services. I will keep it in mind if the discussion comes
up again. (Well, maybe I will remember. <g>)
